Adding and Using Two-Factor Authentication | Authenticator App
Using an Authenticator app for TOTP (Time-based One-Time Password) is a simple and effective way to secure your Rentec Direct account and is available for all managers and subusers of your Rentec Direct account.
Once your Authenticator app is synced with your Rentec Direct software, each time you log in with your username and password, a security code will automatically be generated, and the software will provide you space to enter the code.
You can begin using this additional security in two quick steps:
Download an Authenticator app
Tip: An Authenticator app downloaded to your mobile device provides you with security when logging into your workspace on your computer and mobile device
- Select the Authenticator app as your login two-factor option
Download an Authenticator app
Authenticator apps are available for Android, iOS, Tablet, and pc. Some of the commonly used apps are:
Select the Authenticator app as your Two-Factor Authentication Option
It’s quick and easy to select TOTP as your two-factor authentication option using the steps below.
In your Rentec Direct account:
- Click on Settings
- Under Account, click on Login & Password
- In the Two-Factor Authentication section, check the box to Enable Two-Factor Authentication
Click on the ⭐ to make the Authenticator app the primary Two-Factor Authentication method
Tip: Hover over the "?" for more helpful information
- Click on Configure to generate a QR code for setup, or click on "Having trouble scanning the code?" to be provided with a code
- Sync the Authenticator app with your software
- Open the Authenticator app downloaded in Step 1
- Scan the QR code to populate a code or use the code copied in the previous step
- Enter the code into the Verify the code from the app box
- Click on Enable, then click on Submit to save changes
Moving forward, when you log into your Rentec Direct account, after entering your username and password, a security code will automatically populate in your Authentication app for you to securely enter into the software.
System Notes:
- Rentec Direct requires all accounts with online payment processing to set up two-factor authentication to keep your account data and funds secure.
- If your account does not include payment processing, we highly recommend that all users of your account activate two-factor authentication (2FA) to keep your data safe.

Using the Authenticator app to log in
Moving forward, when you log into your Rentec Direct account, after entering your username and password, a security code will automatically populate in your Authentication app for you to securely enter into the software.
Note: Before using an authenticator app for the first time, be sure to log out of any sessions you might have currently open.
The following steps will guide you through logging in to Rentec Direct using TOTP two-factor authentication.
- Go to your Rentec Direct login screen
- Enter your Username and Password
- Access your Authenticator app to retrieve the secure code required for Two-Factor
Tips:
- To help keep your account safe, the code will change every 30 seconds and is often locked out after too many attempts.
- If websites aren’t accepting your one-time password, make sure the date and time are set correctly on your device. Learn how to set the date and time on Mac , iOS , Windows , and Android.
- If you are locked out of your device:
- Reach out to another user on your team who has access to your login information to disable the authenticator app, or
- Reach out to the customer support of the authenticator app you selected
How Subusers Set Up an Authenticator app as the Primary Two-Factor Authentication Method
Subusers access using two-factor authentication is basically the same as the admin's. The steps below walk through how they can establish their Two-Factor Authentication preference.
When a subuser first logs in to their account, they are greeted with a pop-up window about two-factor authentication with a link that will take them to their settings.
The following steps walk through how subusers can set up their two-factor authentication.
In your Rentec Direct account:
- From the window, click on Go to Security Settings
- In the Two-Factor Authentication section, check the box to Enable Two-Factor Authentication
- Click on the ⭐to select the Authenticator app as the primary Two-Factor Authentication method
- Click on Configure to generate a QR code for setup
- If they are using an authentication app on their PC, they can click on "Having trouble scanning the code" to be provided with a key. Click on Try to scan the QR code again to switch back.
- Sync the Authenticator app with your software
- Open the Authenticator app downloaded in Step 1
- Scan the QR code to populate a code
- Enter the code into the Verify the code from the app box
- Click on Enable, then click on Submit to save changes

Account Login Assistance for Subusers (Temporarily Disable 2FA)
Authenticator apps are one of the easiest, most secure options for logging into your software.
If a subuser is unable to log in, they may reach out to the account administrator or someone on your team with permission to update subuser accounts.
If a subuser is unable to log in, their two-factor setting may need to be deactivated by the account administrator or authorized member, allowing the subuser to set up a new two-factor option.
The following steps walk through deactivating two-factor for subusers:
In your Rentec Direct account:
- Click on Settings
- Under Account, click on Users / Managers & Users (PM accounts)
- Click on the User
- Click on Disable 2FA
- Click on the Disable 2FA Authentication link when prompted and Save Changes
The subuser can now log back in and update their Two-Factor Authentication
