Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Overview | Keep Your Account Data Safe and Secure
Rentec Direct requires all users on accounts with online payment processing to enable two-factor authentication (2FA) to help protect account data and funds.
If your account does not include online payment processing, we still strongly recommend enabling 2FA for added security.
Two-factor authentication adds an extra verification step beyond your username and password, making it significantly harder for unauthorized users to access your account even if your password is compromised.
What is Two-Factor Authentication?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second layer of security to your login, requiring:
- Something you know (your password)
- Something you have (a trusted device, app, or physical USB security key)
This additional step helps protect your account from phishing attempts, password leaks, and unauthorized access.
Available Two-Factor Authentication Methods
Rentec Direct supports all two-factor authentication options available on your device or browser. Depending on your computer, operating system, and browser, you may see different verification options during setup or login.

Below are details about the most common and widely used 2FA methods.
Security Key
A security key is a physical or device-based authentication method used to verify your identity during login.
Security key options can vary based on your device, operating system, and browser. For example, you may use a built-in option like Face ID or fingerprint authentication, or a USB-style physical security key.
Why use a security key
- Requires physical possession of the device
- Provides the highest level of protection
- Protects against phishing and remote attacks

Authenticator App
Authenticator apps generate time-based security codes that refresh automatically, usually every 30 seconds. You would enter this code during login to verify your identity.
Why use an authenticator app
- Does not require a mobile carrier service
- Works offline once configured
- Reliable alternative if text messages are unreliable or delayed

Text Message (SMS) Authentication
Text message authentication sends a one-time verification code to your mobile phone when you log in. You enter this code to complete the sign-in process.
Why use text message authentication
- Simple and easy to set up
- Widely supported on most mobile devices
- Requires cellular service to receive codes

When Will I Be Asked for Two-Factor Authentication?
If the system does not recognize your computer, you'll be prompted for a secondary form of account verification.
This means that even if someone obtained or guessed your password, they would still need to have possession of your USB security key or mobile phone to log in and access your data.
ON security personal devices, you may see the option to select "Don't ask for codes again on this computer."
Important:
- This option is appropriate for personal, trusted devices
- It is not recommended for shared or public computers
Users Access and Account Security
Rentec Direct allows you to add an unlimited number of users to your account.
Each user should:
- Have their own username and password
- Set up their own two-factor authentication
If you previously shared your login credentials with others, we strongly recommend creating subuser accounts instead.
Once 2FA is enabled:
- Only users with the correct authentication method can log in
- Shared passwords will no longer grant access
- Subusers can be assigned their own secure login credentials
