Passwordless Login Using Passkeys
Passkeys provide a fast, secure, one-touch way to sign in to Rentec Direct. With a passkey enabled, you can bypass entering a username and password and log in using secure authentication linked to your device.
By replacing traditional passwords with device-based verification, passkeys offer stronger protection against phishing and credential theft. They also create a faster, simpler login experience with fewer interruptions, helping reduce password resets and lockouts while ensuring secure access through your trusted device.
Create a Passkey
To get started, you'll first create a passkey while securely logged in.

In your Rentec Direct account:
- Click Settings
- Under Account, select Login and Password
- Click +Add Passkey
- Enter a nickname that's easy to recognize
- Choose the device you want to link the passkey to and follow the prompts
Setup is similar to enabling two-factor authentication and may vary slightly by device.
Log In Using a Passkey

Once your passkey is created, signing in is quick and seamless.
At the Rentec Direct login screen:
- Click Use Passkey
- Follow the prompt to verify your identity
After verification, you'll be logged in without entering a username or password.
How Passkeys Verify Your Identity
Passkeys verify your identity by confirming that you have access to a trusted device that you have added as your selected login verification method. (security key)
Option 1: Traditional login
Username + password (something you know)
This method relies only on a password, which can be forgotten, reused across sites, shared unintentionally, or exposed through phishing attacks. Because of these risks, password-only login is considered the least secure option.
Option 2: More secure — Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Username + password (something you know) + 2FA (something you have)
This method adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second verification step after entering your password. You'll confirm your login using a trusted device such as a mobile phone, authenticator app, or physical USB security key.
Even if someone obtains your password, they still cannot access your account without this second factor.
Option 3: Most secure and fastest — Passkey login
Passkey login allows you to bypass entering your username & password and the two-factor authentication steps, entering only a verification step you established and linked to your account.
This option reduces the risk associated with passwords while also making sign-in faster and simpler.
Device-Specific Examples
Your login experience may vary depending on your device or operating system. In some cases, you may be asked to approve the login using a second device you already have access to, such as entering a secure code sent to your phone, confirming a prompt in an authentication app, or touching a physical USB security key. This confirms that you are present at your computer and in possession of the trusted device used to verify your identity.
Examples of device-specific authentication include:
- Mac: Touch ID or a device prompt
- Windows: Security prompt or PIN authentication
- Mobile devices: Face ID or fingerprint recognition
- Security key: Physical USB authentication
Using passkeys, your identity is verified without sharing or storing a reusable password, providing a secure and seamless login.
